A new Kwik Star store is under construction at the corner of Second Avenue North and North 15th Street in Fort Dodge. The previous Kwik Star store that once occupied the site closed on June 18 and has since been demolished.

The Kwik Star store that stood at the intersection of Second Avenue North and 15th Street is gone.

Where it once stood, construction crews are working to build a new, larger one.

The new store will measure 7,320 square feet. It will have eight fuel pumps.

The new store will be set back farther from North 15th Street than its predecessor was. To make that possible, Kwik Star purchased six properties to the east of its original site. A few houses in the 200 block of North 16th Street and in the 1500 block of Second Avenue North were torn down to make that shift possible.

The project was announced in early 2025. At that time, the company reported that construction would begin this year.

An anticipated completion date has not been announced.

Dean Snyder Construction, of Clear Lake, is the general contractor.

At a previous Plan and Zoning Commission meeting, Thomas Leichliter, the associate city planner, said the company will be required to install lights that point straight down and are enclosed so that the bulbs cannot be seen from the sides.

“The goal is to reduce as much outward light pollution as is humanly possible,” he said.

The former Kwik Star store closed on June 18.
