FD school board OKs $70 million budget

No public comment received

Fort Dodge Community Schools will have a $70 million budget for fiscal year 2022 now that the school board has approved the new budget for the 2021-2022 school year.

The board unanimously approved the $70,667,803 budget at its Monday night meeting after a public hearing on the matter.

District Director of Financial Services Brandon Hansel and Superintendent Jesse Ulrich said they had not received any written comment from the public prior to Monday’s meeting. No member of the public attended the public hearing on the budget.

The budget includes the general fund, management fund, physical plant and equipment levy fund and other funds.

The district will have $70,998,979 in funding resources for FY22, including about $17 million in property tax revenue.

The school board also approved a resolution allowing for the district to collect a surplus levy of $1,050,000 to pay toward the costs of the general obligation school bonds, series 2016. The surplus levy will be included with the total property tax levy for FY22.

For FY22, the property tax levy for the district will be $16.20 per $1,000 taxable value.

While the levy rate has decreased by 30 cents since last year, for many property owners in the district, the dollar amount they will pay in taxes will likely increase due to the assessed valuation of property within the district increasing by 2.4% since January 2020.

For example, a residential property assessed at $100,000 will have a taxable value of $56,409, which would produce a property tax burden of $914.28 for the year, an increase of $2.63.
