10 Under 40: Kelly Hinds

Community employment director, One Vision

Editor’s note: This feature highlights one of 10 individuals under age 40 who make a difference in their business and their community. This spotlight first ran in the Sept. 8, 2019, special section of The Messenger, presented in conjunction with the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance and the Fort Dodge Young Professionals.

What sparked your interest in your career path?

I grew up with an innocent view of the world and believed people’s intentions were good. The nonprofit world pulled me in with what it represents: compassion, generosity, purpose and the eternal optimism nonprofits possess and demonstrate — that solutions exist.

What’s one thing you wish you’d known when you were younger?

To appreciate challenges, pain, obstacles and loss. Pain and adversity and joy and tranquility are two sides of the same coin. Without one, there wouldn’t be the other. Everything in life has an opposite correlation with something else.

What’s the best part of your work?

People. Hands down. In human services, you hear how you can make a positive impact and help people grow, gain skills and work toward independence. The true impact is how people contribute to your development. The beauty lies in the value we add to each other.

What’s the best advice you ever received?

Don’t compare yourself to others, unless what you see is something of deep worth, such as their generosity or kindness. Who inspires you to live better in the way that matters most? Spend your precious time and thoughts on this, instead.

Life is full of defining moments that helped shape who you are today. What’s your defining moment?

Losing my father at a young age, becoming a mom and being a step-parent, to name a few.
All of them involve connection and making the most out of the time we have with each other.

What motivates you to give back to your community?

My family and the pursuit of happiness. When you commit your time and effort, you can help make the community a better place for you and your family, as well as teach your kids the value of giving back. Giving back allows you to connect to your community, and the only requirements you need are an open mind, a willingness to do whatever is needed and a positive attitude.

What’s on your bucket list?

Stand under a waterfall, solve a Rubik’s Cube, ride in a hot air balloon, run a marathon, go zip-lining, see the mountains and go on a vacation with my husband … without the kids.

Starting at $4.94/week.
