FD council to act on $116M budget
Sanitary sewer system is the biggest single spending category
A roughly $116 million budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 will be considered by the Fort Dodge City Council when it meets Monday.
The proposed budget keeps the property tax rate unchanged at $20.42 per $1,000 of taxable value for the fourth year in a row.
The council will act on the budget during its regular business meeting, which will begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.
The spending plan is for the fiscal year that begins July 1 and ends on June 30, 2020.
It calls for spending $116,280,901.
The budget contains funding for all the city government’s various departments and operations. Running the sanitary sewer system accounts for the biggest single spending category at $6,236,063. The money for that budget comes from sewer bills, not property taxes.
The property tax levy is divided up into these different categories:
• $8.10 for the general fund, which pays for police and fire protection, the library, the Blanden Memorial Art Museum, parks and recreation and other government functions.
• $5.78 for employee benefits
• $4.59 to pay off general obligation bond debt
• 61 cents for emergency management and the county 911 dispatch center
• 53 cents for liability and property insurance
• 27 cents for Dodger Area Rapid Transit
• 27 cents to help balance the general fund
• 12 cents for Citizens Central
• 6 cents for the Karl L. King Municipal Band
