Humboldt council OKs fireworks

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt City Council approved a fireworks permit from 4Gs Pyrotechnics of Belmond for a fireworks display to be held in conjunction with the annual Cy-Hawk Rivalry event Sept. 7.

The event is sponsored by the Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber of Commerce, which is paying for the display through donations.

The application was tabled at Monday’s council meeting for the council to get more information, and because two members were absent. It was approved during a special council meeting Friday.

On Friday, Jenna Mulford, chamber president, said she and another chamber member checked the location. A 210-foot area around the bridge will be closed off.

“No. 1, I was going to make sure nobody could get on that bridge,” she said.

The bridge will be closed beginning at 9:30 that evening for the display. The top of the Sumner Avenue Bridge hill will also be closed. The Fire Department will be at the north end of the bridge.

Mayor Dan Scholl said he had talked with some of the residents in the area and they were supportive of the display. Part of the concern of the council probably stems from the complaints the council had about the prolific use of fireworks by the public over the July 4 holiday, he said.

“That was my main concern that the residents down there knew what was going to go on,” Sheriff Dean Kruger said.

Fire Chief Jim Gronbach said the only safe place to set off the display would be from the center of the bridge.

Councilman Jim Vermeer was absent but submitted his concerns in an email. One of his concerns was about possible structural damage to the bridge, Scholl said. Vermeer was also concerned about future requests from others. Future requests would be considered individually on an as-needed basis, the council said. The public is not allowed to set off fireworks outside the time allowed by the state.

Councilman Joel Goodell said he has talked to a couple chamber members who were supportive of the display.

“I don’t think we should be working against our Chamber of Commerce,” Councilman John Sleiter said. ”I think we should be working in conjunction with them.”
