King Ringers Handbell spring concert is April 14

The King Ringers Handbell Ensemble will hold its Spring Concert at 4 p.m. April 14 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1436 21st Ave. N.

The King Ringers Handbell Ensemble play a variety of genres in their music: Christian, holiday, contemporary, and popular hits of the day.

This year’s concert will feature the following selections: “Peal con brio,” by Karen Thompson, which is the concert opener and used as a processional. “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” words and music by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson, arranged Cynthia Dobrinski. “Amazing Grace,” arranged by Cathy Moklebust, can be used with optional organ and congregational singing.

Judy Zoch will perform a handbell solo, with mallets and bells on the table, accompanied by Jan Altemeier, Joan Arndt and Janine Niemeyer, titled “The Typewriter,” by Leroy Anderson, arranged by Martha Lynn Thompson. The handbell solo is arranged by Carol J. Smith and Jane E. Patty. This arrangement includes a written part for an actual typewriter. “Because He Lives,” by Gloria and William Gaither, arranged by Bill Ingram, is especially appropriate for the Easter season, and includes a section with hand chimes. “Rejoice! He Is Risen! (Rejoice in the Spirit),” by Cathy Moklebust. Energy and joy abound in this composition, featuring a rhythmic melody in the upper bells, and other techniques used are thumb damping, malleting and hand chimes used in the middle section as melody.

“Acclamation For Bells,” by Douglas E. Wagner. A bell-tree duet will be performed by Joan Arndt and Janine Niemeyer, accompanied by Jan Altemeier. Their selection is “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” or “The Easter Song,” by Barbara Brocker. This is a descant to the familiar Easter Hymn and follows the congregational singing which adds to the Easter Service. “Praise to the Lord,” arranged by John A. Behnke. Rhythm is the key to this piece. It opens with percussion, and a lively rhythm. The middle section features hand chimes, and ends joyously. The final selection is “Lift High the Cross,” words by George W. Kitchin, music by Sydney H. Nicholson, setting by Joel Raney, handbell part by Arnold B. Sherman. This features an organ/piano duet, performed by Jan Altemeier and Judy Zoch, along with voices and handbells. This piece is ideal for the Easter season, as well. It features the hymns, “Lift High the Cross,” “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” and “Thine is the Glory.”
