Gael teams in action at Hampton

HAMPTON — The St. Edmond boys and girls track and field teams wrapped up the week by competing here on Friday at the Jim Basye Co-Ed Relays. Anthony Valles had a big night for the Gaels, placing in the Top-5 in the three individual distance events. The senior was third in both the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter runs, adding a fifth in the 800. Valles went 10:09.2 in the 3,200 and finished the 1,600 in 4:49.40 behind only fellow cross country standouts Knute Rogne and Hayden Thompson of Lake Mills. Big weeks for ex-local talent Henning, Elsbecker

Two former local standouts have had memorable weeks competing in the American Rivers Conference. St. Edmond graduate Kaili Henning tossed a perfect game for the Loras College softball team just days after Fort Dodge Senior High’s Eli Elsbecker had a six-RBI performance in a win for Coe College on the baseball diamond. Henning, a sophomore, struck out seven without a single Buena Vista player reaching base in a 12-0 victory in five innings Friday afternoon. Tritons hammer Ellsworth twice, improve to 42-9

The No. 18 Iowa Central baseball team began the final homestand of the season with a sweep over Ellsworth here Friday at Rogers Park. Scores were 16-6 in six innings and 15-3 in seven. The Tritons (42-9 overall, 20-6 in the ICCAC) scored in all six innings of the opener, highlighted by an eight-run fifth. Tritons open postseason play

BOONE — The Iowa Central softball team begins postseason play here Friday in the Region 11-B Tournament. The Tritons (38-16 overall) open with Hawkeye at 4 p.m. following No. 10 Des Moines Area and Northeast squaring off. Winners of those two games will play on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the finals set for Sunday starting at noon. The tournament is double-elimination.
