Two in a row for Dodgers
Gilliland sets career high with 24 in victory at DM Hoover
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls have their first win streak of the season after knocking off Des Moines Hoover here Friday night, 54-43.
The Dodgers (5-8 overall) posted a 56-11 victory over Des Moines East this past Tuesday, and have won three of four overall.
Freshman Brooklyn Gilliland had a breakout performance in her return from injury, scoring 24 points with eight rebounds. LJ Maehl, who became program 5-on-5 career scoring leader, added 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Gilliland, who had to miss the last two and a half games in concussion protocol, knocked down four 3-pointers, and Maehl swished three.
Linnie Pratt, Malay Hollins, Bella Lee and Addison Lentsch each scored three for Fort Dodge, which led 31-15 at the half. Ellie Doster dished out three assists. Hollins recorded six rebounds.
The Dodgers, who had made only 19 three-point baskets on the season before Friday, hit nine triples against the Huskies. Pratt and Lentsch had the other two to go along with Gilliland and Maehl’s combined seven.
“I was very proud of the girls,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “They fought off several comeback attempts by Hoover and played well under the conditions.”
For Des Moines Hoover (3-10), Chere Ambers had 16 points, Jenesis Brooks-Hayes added 10 and Meleah Davis eight.
The Huskies took a 5-0 lead right out of the gate, but the Dodgers countered with a 18-2 burst. Fort Dodge’s biggest lead was at 40-21 midway through the third period before Hoover fought its way back.
Next action for the Dodgers will be Tuesday at Waterloo East. Varsity tip is set for 6:15 p.m. in FDSH’s fourth straight road contest.
Earlier this year, Fort Dodge fell to the Trojans, 61-39.
