Triton men prevail on the road in ranked matchup

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The 10th-ranked Iowa Central men won for the ninth time in 10 road games here on Saturday, besting No. 14 Iowa Western, 79-68.

Jordan Cain led four players in double figures with 18 points. Jalen Wynter added 14 for the Tritons (17-4 overall, 9-3 in the ICCAC). Both CJ Mitchell and Tashun Pender scored 13 while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.

Cain tallied seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mitchell recorded five steals. Carter Loney added seven points, five rebounds and blocked four shots off the bench.

“We defended as a really high level,” ICCC head coach Mason Denholm said. “When you can hold teams to 38 percent from the floor and 17 percent from the 3-point line, it keeps you in games.

“If we continue to defend like we are capable of, I like where we can go.”

For the Reivers (17-4, 8-4), Jordan Dewaele scored 16 points with 15 rebounds. Judah Vignery added 15 points. Iowa Western shot just 3 of 17 from the 3-point line, including a 1-for-10 performance in the opening half.

Wynter knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in the first half, helping Iowa Central race out to a 45-38 lead. Cain was 3 of 3 from deep with 10 points after the half, as Pender recorded six points and seven rebounds in the second half.

Up next for the Tritons will be fourth-ranked Ellsworth inside Hodges Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
