SE girls reach double digits for victories

While far from one of the better performances of the season, St. Edmond girls head coach CJ Tracy wasn’t about to let what had just happened go unnoticed.

Eden Horn scored 20 points and Chloe Palmer added 12 as the Gaels recorded win No. 10 on the season with a 54-8 victory over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Thursday night.

This marks the first time since the 2014-15 season that St. Edmond (10-3 overall, 6-2 in the North Central Conference) has reached double-digit wins. They have now won 18 games over the past two years after prevailing just 16 times total the previous seven seasons combined.

“All of the credit goes to these girls,” Tracy said. “They’ve put in the work, put in the time and put in the effort to help turn this entire program around. I’m so proud of everything they have accomplished.

“We might not have had our best overall game, but we found a way to stay the course and pick up the win.”

The Gaels scored the first 28 points of the evening in winning their fifth straight contest overall. They are third in the league standings behind only Clear Lake and No. 15 (Class 3A) Algona by a half-game.

“These girls are doing something special and they’re fun to follow,” Tracy said. “People need to come watch these girls.”

Palmer and Sophia Schlienz each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the opening quarter before Horn took over, as the freshman scored 12 in the second by herself to give St. Edmond a 36-5 lead.

Horn also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Abby Huss chipped in six points and Anna Lursen three rebounds with two steals.

Olivia Andrew had six rebounds off the bench.

For the Cowgirls (0-14, 0-8), Ruby Poac and Brianna Reyes each had four points.

St. Edmond has now swept two NCC opponents this year after taking care of Iowa Falls-Alden earlier this week. They head to Algona on Tuesday before a non-conference contest at West Bend-Mallard Thursday.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows is at Clear Lake Tuesday night.
