Fort Dodge back on the road
The Fort Dodge basketball teams head to Des Moines twice this week in search of some much-needed momentum.
The Dodgers face Des Moines East in a varsity doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 6:15 p.m. That will be followed by a Friday twinbill at Des Moines Hoover, with the same start times.
The FDSH girls (3-8 overall) split their most recent weekend games with a victory over Sioux City West followed by a loss at Ankeny Centennial. The Scarlet girls, meanwhile, earned their first win of the season with a 35-30 triumph over Des Moines North last Friday.
Dodger senior LJ Maehl had 12 points and six rebounds against the Jaguars, which moved her within 20 points of breaking Molly Nelson’s career 5-on-5 program scoring record of 1,172. Maehl also attained the No. 2 position for all-time FDSH rebounding (565), trailing only Nelson (681). The Northwest Missouri State recruit recently passed Barb Crooks (554) for the runner-up spot on the glass.
Junior Ellie Doster added five rebounds and four assists at Centennial on Saturday.
For the season, Maehl is at 15.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Freshman Brooklyn Gilliland, who was injured against West and missed the game against the Jaguars, is adding 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals, with sophomore Malay Hollins contributing 4.7 rebounds a night. Doster leads the way in assists.
The Dodgers thump East at home earlier this season, 75-4. The Scarlets are paced by senior Serenity Thompson and junior Brooklyn Smith offensively. Junior Jaleeyah Hardy is their top rebounder.
The Hoover girls are 2-8 to date. Sophomore Chere Ambers (15.5 points), Freshman Jenesis Brooks-Hayes (11.3) and sophomore Malak Nubie (6.2) are the main offensive contributors for the Huskies.
The Dodger boys dropped a 63-37 decision at Centennial on Saturday, less than 24 hours after falling to Sioux City West, 78-58.
Sophomore Reggie Pederson leads Fort Dodge in scoring and rebounding.
The East boys are 6-3 after an 82-77 loss to Sioux City West last Saturday. Senior Jayvion Hanson (17.4 points) and junior Samson Amenu (14.9) pace the Scarlets, who pulled away from the Dodgers in the FDSH gym last month to prevail, 64-47.
The Hoover boys are winless to date at 0-9. Senior Diyon Berry (11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds) has been the steadiest contributor for the Huskies.
