The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team continues to set the bar for the program moving forward.
The Dodgers (8-3 overall) finished their dual season with their eighth victory — the most in program history.
Fort Dodge knocked off Marshalltown on Thursday by a score of 48-35.
“It’s been an exciting season for us,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “We won our first dual this year and have won eight total, we have a 150-match winner, and we now have a full lineup.
“I’m proud that the girls are starting to figure it out. Wrestling is not an easy sport; it takes time, and these girls are putting in the effort.”
With the Dodgers leading the dual 36-29 and three matches remaining, freshman Tori Jakeman sealed the victory. Jakeman (24-23 at 170) pinned Donae Garith in 4:39 for the win and a 42-29 victory.
FDSH won eight matches, all by fall.
The lone Dodger senior, Mariaha Benedict, picked up her 155th victory of the season at 135 pounds. The school’s career win leader is now 155-34.
Benedict pinned Leah Graves in 1:24. The three-time state qualifier is now 37-5 this year, and has won 83 total matches in the past two seasons.
“The good thing and the bad thing about it is we have one senior,” Koenig said. “We have one of the best wrestlers the program has had in Mariaha. She has been able to help lead this younger group.
“Everyone will be coming back next year, though, so that’s a positive.”
Freshman Shayley Butrick (36-10 at 110) started the match with the quickest fall of the evening, pinning Maelee Corona in 13 seconds. FDSH sophomore Brooklyn Nelson (30-13 at 115) doubled up, pinning Shailynn Saide in 1:47.
Freshman Adalyn Ford (18-24 at 120) pinned Patricia Mateo Merida in 5:46. Mariana Taute (17-25 at 130) had a quick fall as well, pinning Angela Sterling-Nelson in 21 seconds.
Desiree Austin (6-21 at 140) also earned a fall, pinning Charlotte Reyes in five minutes. Fort Dodge freshman Ava Potter (36-4 at 235) then capped the dual with a fall in 3:29 over Nevaeh Gonzalez.
“Desiree and Adalyn had big wins,” Koenig said. “Tori continues to execute and get better each time out.
“Everyone in our lineup fought hard and continues to listen and move in the right direction.”
Fort Dodge is back in action on Saturday when they wrestle at the Northern Iowa girls tournament in Mason City.
