Unbeaten Gael boys rally to top Madrid in Hardwood Classic

The St. Edmond boys gained both a little bit of revenge and even more momentum heading into the extended break with a 47-38 victory over Madrid on Saturday at the Hardwood Classic inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Last year, the Tigers knocked the Gaels out of the Class 1A state tournament in the semifinals on their way to claiming the state championship.

This time around, St. Edmond (5-0 overall) used a pressure-packed defense to limit Madrid (6-3) to its lowest point total in over five years.

“It was kind of frustrating for the kids early because (Madrid) worked the shot clock down and played a 2-3 zone,” St. Edmond head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We were fouling a bit too much and trying to force the issue, but once we figured a few things out, we were able to get out when we could.”

Senior Hunter Horn scored a game-high 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field. He also had six rebounds and took three charges with a blocked shot.

Carson Bargfrede, a Buena Vista University commit, sank four three-pointers and scored 12 points. Grant Galles added five with three rebounds and two steals.

Jakob Koopman collected nine rebounds and had two steals with two assists for St. Edmond. Jack McElroy dished out nine assists with four points and a steal, and Ty Mericle sank a triple.

“Grant hit a big shot and Carson had some key buckets for us to that got us going,” Kochendorfer said. “This was a nice win for the kids because they did have to battle through some adversity and stay in the game.

“I thought it really showed their mental toughness.”

As a team, the Gaels made seven triples and had 12 assists on 19 made field goals. After falling behind early, they outscored Madrid in the second half, 26-16.

Jevyn Severson, one of the top sophomore football recruits in the state and a returning starter alongside Emerson Bridgewater from a year ago, had 12 points but was only 2 of 12 from the free throw line. Bridgewater missed on nine of 10 field goals and was 0-for-8 from the 3-point line, but did have a team-high eight rebounds.

Severson grabbed five rebounds and had four assists. Logan Bogardus added nine points for the Tigers.

Bridgewater, Kolbie Owens and Zach Newell all scored five.

Madrid starts one junior and three other sophomores alongside Severson, as two other underclassmen saw minutes vs. St. Edmond. The Tigers graduated leading scorer Toryn Severson, who is now at Waldorf.

The Gaels are off until Jan. 6 when they travel to Humboldt for North Central Conference action.
