STORY CITY — After coming up just short in his first two tournament championship matches this season, Matthew Crimmins secured himself a spot atop the podium here Saturday.
Crimmins, a St. Edmond sophomore, scored the 144-pound title at the Jim Kinyon Norsemen Invitational hosted by Roland-Story. He improved to 10-2 on the year with a win over Ryker Bovy of Woodward-Granger in the finals.
Earlier this year, Crimmins was the runner-up at the Doug Wood Invitational in Manson and the Bob Roethler Invitational at Emmetsburg. He earned two major decisions and a pin on his road to the gold-medal round for a third time in as many weeks on Saturday.
Crimmins held a 13-4 lead late in the third period vs. Bovy when his coaches opted to injury default, resulting in the victory for the Gael.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the overall team champ, as Williamsburg, Atlantic, Anamosa and Woodward-Granger completed the Top-5. Eagle Grove finished 11th, South Central Calhoun was 12th, St. Edmond finished 19th and Southeast Valley was 21st.
“I honestly think this was the toughest tournament of the year so far for Matthew,” SEHS head coach Kaden McClintock said. “He had a great showing. What I was most impressed about was he scored bonus points in every single match.
“The bracket had the No. 6 and No. 9 ranked wrestlers in Class 2A in it. Bovy was an AAU state champ last year and had knocked off some top kids this season already, so it was a really great performance for Matthew.”
Crimmins was the lone Gael wrestler to earn a win during the invite, as Jace Stanley, Caleb Mosier, Cooper Cokeley, Sam Touney and Evan Knox were all in action.
“We continue to see improvements each day,” McClintock said. “I told the kids that going into the second half of the season, treat it as a fresh start. We’ll work on some key areas and our conditioning to get us ready for the run to February.”
Dylan Terwilliger and Jayden Kreitlow each finished third for Eagle Grove, as James Harle was fifth. Ethan Schreiber and Christian Schild claimed sixth while Reece Demuth was eighth.
For South Central Calhoun, Karson Wuebker remained unbeaten, winning gold at 106 with three falls and a technical fall. Kase Kraft and Jace Pedersen each finished fourth, as Curtis Bullock was eighth.
Keelan Wellman was sixth and Wyatt Blair seventh to lead Southeast Valley.
