Four Dodgers in quarters

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Four Fort Dodge girls wrestlers are still alive for championships at the Council Bluffs Classic.

Shayley Butrick (110), Brooklyn Nelson (115), Mariaha Benedict (135) and Ava Potter (235) all went undefeated in Friday’s action, advancing to the quarterfinals.

The Dodgers are currently sitting in ninth place with 88 team points, their highest spot ever after Day 1.

“I’m super happy with where we are at, sitting in ninth place and we are trying to come out strong tomorrow,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “We are trying to get the highest placing we have had.

“We have a young team with freshmen that are still on the rise.”

Butrick (21-2) picked up four falls on the day, three in the first period and the quickest in 27 seconds. Butrick pinned Kristina Anderson of Papillion-La Vista in 48 seconds to reach the quarters.

Nelson (17-6) had three falls, all in the first period. She knocked off Payton Stanley of Millard North to reach the quarterfinals.

Benedict (20-1) had three falls, all under a minute. She pinned Saoirse McCall of Gardner Edgerton in 30 seconds to advance to quarters.

Potter (18-2) pinned Emma Mehl of Washburn Rural in 2:20 in her third round match.

“With a win in the quarterfinals, Mariaha will likely meet a state champion from Nebraska,” Koenig said. “Shayley could also have a returning state champion.

“This is a tough tournament and the girls will have tough matches each time they hit the mat.”

Picking up two wins for the Dodgers was Adalyn Ford (125) and Desiree Austin (140). Mariana Taute (130), Tori Jakeman (170) and Emma Potter (190) had one win each.

Quarterfinals and consolation matches begin at 9:30 p.m. with the finals to start at approximately 3 p.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
