Tritons earn softball honors
Iowa Central’s Natalie Rasmussen and Kyra Kain were named to the all-Region 11 softball first-team, the ICCAC announced.
Rasmussen and Kain were joined by second team selections Avery McKinney, Jersey Hawf and Jillian French, as Jaidan Abel and Jozie Kerr each made honorable mention.
Former Newell-Fonda standout and Creighton University commit Kierra Jungers of Des Moines Area made the first-team.
Rasmussen, a sophomore, hit .455 with 24 home runs, 91 runs, 67 RBI, 41 steals, 15 doubles and five triples, leading or tying for the team lead in all those categories. She had a slugging percentage of .940 and an on-base percentage of .520.
Kain, also a sophomore, hit .425 with five homers, 13 doubles, two triples, 40 RBI and 34 runs scored.
“Natalie and Kyra set the tone for our offense all year,” ICCC head coach Bo Tjebben said. “They were among the many who put in the time and effort to improve in all areas of the game and I think that really showed with their production.”
McKinney hit .421 with nine extra-base hits, 40 runs, 22 RBI and 16 steals, Hawf sported a .401 average with 16 homer, 15 doubles, 67 RBI and 58 runs scored and French went 14-6 in the circle with seven complete games, 146 strikeouts in 134 innings and a 2.72 earned run average.
Abel won 12 games, recorded two saves and had five complete games, striking out 96 batters with a 3.32 earned run average. Kerr had six homers and six doubles, driving in 25.
McKinney, French and Abel were sophomores while Hawf and Kerr were freshmen.
“I am very proud of all the girls,” Tjebben said. “They battled night in and night out in the toughest conference in junior college softball, and they never backed down from the challenge.”
Jungers, a sophomore, went 22-6 with one save inside the circle, recording 19 complete games with 315 strikeouts and a 1.34 earned run average. She allowed just 73 hits in over 172 innings pitched and 33 earned runs with 32 walks.
Kirkwood, the regular season champions who won the Region 11-A Tournament title to qualify for the NJCAA Div. II World Series, swept the top awards, including defensive player of the year for Mischa Reiners.
Reiners, the daughter of former Fort Dodge Senior High all-stater Randy Reiners, had 247 putouts, 13 assists and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The sophomore did not allow a stolen base against her in league play, adding 86 total bases, 52 RBI, 45 runs, 18 steals and five triples at the plate.
The Eagles also had the offensive player of the year in Shannon Finn, pitcher of the year in Libby Trewin and coach of the year in Eric Friese.
