Early mistakes in the field hindered the Newell-Fonda softball team here Tuesday, as the Mustangs fell to Riverside in a Class 1A quarterfinal, 14-6 in five innings.
With the win, the Bulldogs (25-3 overall) advance to face Wayne in the semifinals at Rogers Park on Channel Seeds Field Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Adaline Martins had three hits, scored two runs and drove in another, as Peyton Schafer and Elly Henderson each had two hits and two RBI.
“We love being aggressive on the bases,” Riverside head coach Lacie Patterson said. “We get on and we just run. Our key all season has been to win every inning and every pitch.”
Making a return to state for the first time since 2007, Riverside plated five quick runs in the first, taking advantage of three errors.
Newell-Fonda will now play Highland in a consolation contest on Dodger Field Wednesday at 12:45 p.m.
Kinzee Hinders had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, as Anna Mercer had two hits with an RBI and a run scored.
“We knew coming in that they were a tough team 1-through-9, so we would have to be on our game,” Newell-Fonda head coach Courtney (Vaughn) Darrow said. “You know when you come down to the state tournament, the Top-8 teams are going to be solid.
“I was just proud of our girls as they never quit and kept fighting.”
