Comets soar into 4A finals

North Polk’s offense continues to hum like a well-oiled machine, and the third-seeded Comets are now soaring into the Class 4A championship round.
Twenty-four hours after scoring eight runs in a quarterfinal victory, North Polk kept the ball rolling and overwhelmed upstart North Scott by an 11-3, six-inning final on Channel Seeds Field at Rogers Sports Complex.
Drake University recruit Ava Husak homered and fired a five-hitter from the circle for the Comets (36-5 overall), who are now in the finals for the first time in school history. North Polk belted out 16 hits, with Husak and Alexandra Mohlke going a combined 6-for-7.
“We just wanted to get going early (at the plate), knowing they (the Lancers) are a good team with a lot of experience (at state),” Husak said. “We only had one defensive mistake, and battled back from that to play a clean game.
“It’s exciting to be in this position. Now we want more. One more.”
After falling into an early 2-0 hole, seventh-seeded North Scott (30-12) fought back with a pair of runs with two outs in the third. That only seemed to fuel the Comets, who answered with a five-run frame of their own for a 7-2 advantage.
North Polk would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth, then end the contest early with two more in the sixth.
Lead-off hitter Madelyn Klever drove in three runs in the win. Her sister, Katelyn, was 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI.
Mohlke also drove in two.
The Comets belted five doubles in all.
Husak (27-2) did the rest, racking up seven strikeouts from the circle.
North Polk now squares off with another upset-minded opponent in Pella (24-12). The Dutch have taken down No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier and fifth-seeded ADM to this point.
First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday at Rogers Park.
Adalynn Johnson went deep for North Scott, which will meet ADM for third place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
