Two in a row for Tritons

HIGHLAND, Kan. — No. 14 Iowa Central couldn’t be stopped from kickoff on here Saturday.

The Tritons (2-0 overall) cruised to a 63-27 victory over Highland (0-2).

“Anytime you go on the road and put up 63, it’s huge,” said Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto. “It’s always tough to go on the road and win. Our entire team was focused, but we need to play a whole lot better and be more disciplined.”

Iowa Central’s first score came on a four-yard touchdown catch from Dalen Huston.

The next two scores for the Tritons came from special teams and was set up by the defense. Ethan Johnson returned a kickoff 73 yards for a score.

After a fumble recovery Jacob Kania caught a 46-yard touchdown strike.

Johnson added a one-yard rushing TD. Marcellus Chandler caught a 17-yard scoring strike. Essex had the longest catch of the day from 78 yards out. Kania reached paydirt for the second time on a four-yard TD toss.

Tony Terry made it 56-7 with a scoring catch and Kania scored his third touchdown on the day from two yards.

The Tritons did have their struggles, as they committed three turnovers and 16 penalties for 142 yards.

Four different Triton quarterbacks threw touchdown passes.

Tyler Purdy was 5-for-9 for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Damarcus Creecy was 8-for-14 for 91 yards and three scores.

JeCari Patton had a TD strike, and Tyler Smith was 7-for-10 for 144 and a touchdown.

Creecy led the ground attack with 44 yards. Johnson has 27 yards and the score.

“We are rotating three or four quarterbacks,” Montalto said. “(Highland) was doing different things up front and bringing multiple pressure looks that forced us to throw the ball.”

Kania finished with five catches for 96 yards and three scores. Essex had the 78-yard TD. Huston, Terry and Chandler had touchdowns.

Iowa Central will host Hutchinson this Saturday inside Dodger Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
