Dodgers take two from Des Moines Lincoln

Fans had the chance to see both veterans and youngsters come up in big spots for the eighth-ranked Fort Dodge softball team on Tuesday.

The Dodgers (18-7 overall) earned a doubleheader sweep over Des Moines Lincoln (3-24). Fort Dodge won the opener, 10-0 in four innings, and the nightcap by a final of 15-1 in four.

“This was a chance to get some players in who have earned the time based on the work they’ve been putting in,” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams. “Every day, I see girls put in the effort. They deserved this chance.”

Eighth-grade pitcher Emersyn Lara (1-0) got her first career varsity start, tossing a one-hitter in three innings of work. Freshman Sydney Carver came in to pitch the final frame.

Lara didn’t allow hit until the fourth. The only base runners reached on two Dodger errors. Carver got a flyout and then the Dodgers turned a double play to end the contest.

“Emersyn made the most of her opportunity,” Adams said. “She pitched well and didn’t show many nerves. Sydney did as well.”

The recent home run barrage continued for Fort Dodge, as the Dodgers recorded four more — giving them nine in the past four contests. On Tuesday, it was a different style of deep balls, as shortstop Hope Alstott hit two inside-the-park homers — one in each contest — and Ellie Doster had one of her own in the second. The sophomores have three long balls each in the last four games.

Alstott’s rounder trippers were of the two-run and three-run variety, while Doster’s was a two-run blast. Senior Cadence Touney hit a two-run shot in the second game.

“The girls were able to play a little freer,” Adams said. “This wasn’t a high-intensity level game, so they were able to have fun, but we were still disciplined at the plate.”

In the nightcap, the Dodgers plated 10 runs in the third inning as they sent 13 batters to the plate and finished with 18 hits.

Junior Natalie Baade had one of the big hits in the frame, recording a three-run triple.

“I’m so happy for Natalie,” Adams said. “She came out swinging and was aggressive.”

Alstott was 3-for-3 with a double and the home run. Doster was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Ashlyn Wills also had three hits and two RBI.

Touney added three hits and two RBI. Grace Nichols contributed two hits and two RBI.

Doster was 2-for-2 with four driven in. Touney also recorded a double.

The top three hitters in the Dodger lineup — Alstott, Meah McCaleb and Doster — were a combined 3-for-4 with eight runs scored, three by courtesy runner Macy Wills for Doster. The trio was hit by pitches a combined five times.

Doster finished the double header 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI. Alstott was 4-for-4 with two home runs and five driven in.

“Hope and Ellie are on fire right now,” Adams said. “They’re just tough outs.”

Freshman Aubrey Alstott (6-4) earned the victory, going four innings, giving up two hits. She struck out five and walked zero.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Wednesday when the Dodgers host Marshalltown in a game that was originally scheduled for Thursday. The twinbill will be at Rogers Park at noon on Yankee Field.
