Trifecta of silvers for Gaels’ Valles

Algona boys earn 10 event titles, meet crown at NCC track and field

CLEAR LAKE — Anthony Valles showed he is ready for the upcoming Class 1A portion of the state track and field meet.

Valles, a St. Edmond junior, placed second in three events here Thursday night at the North Central Conference meet. He was behind 3A state challenger Gavin Weber of Algona in all three distance events, as Weber helped the Bulldogs capture the overall title.

Algona won 10 events in all, including the three from Weber. Max Nevitt swept the throwing events, and Evan Allie captured both the 200 and 400.

Overall, the Gaels finished seventh as Clear Lake was second followed by Humboldt, Iowa Falls-Alden and Webster City.

Valles took silver in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 to pace St. Edmond. He went 2:06.18 in the 800, 4:50.05 in the 1,600 and 10:17.23 in the 3,200.

The 4×800 of Levi Odor-Westrum, Matthew Crimmins, Jonah Carlson and Liam Shannon placed fifth, while the sprint medley relay of Kinnick Henning, Evan Christiansen, Odor-Westrum and Grant Galles took seventh.

Odor-Westrum was seventh in the 400, as was Crimmins in the 1,600.

“It was a great night for Anthony,” SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. “He wanted to see how many PRs he could get running with Weber and he got one in the 3,200, going faster than he did at state last year.

“We held Aaron Hindt out as a precaution, but all the kids that competed did a great job. Liam had a nice PR on his leg of the 4×800, going under 2:10 for the first time, and Grant had a PR on his anchor leg of the sprint medley.”

In junior varsity races, Erik Larson won the 1,600 and 3,200 for St. Edmond and the sprint medley relay of Logan Reed, Christiansen, Thomas Ehn and Aidan Reel placed second. Ehn was third in the 200 as was Reel in the 1,600.

Algona added titles in three relays, as Dawson Elsbecker, Levi Walker, Tyler Bradley and Weber won the distance medley. William Weichert, Tate Garman, Walker and Bradley ran on the first place 4×200 with Weichert, Garman, Walker and Allie comprising the winning 4×100.

Weichert was second in the 100 along with silvers from the sprint medley and 4×400 relays. Will Limbaugh was third in the discus while Garman was third in both the 100 and 200.

Humboldt’s brother duo of Tyler Carlson and Elliott Carlson won both the high jump and long jump, as twins Jackson and Chase Flaherty ran on the winning 4×800 relay.

Justin Ash and Mason Van Pelt rounded out the 4×800, as Jackson Dodd, Van Pelt, Elliot Carlson and Chase Flaherty captured the 4×400.

Van Pelt was second in the 400 hurdles along with the shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays. Cash McIntire took third in the long jump with the sprint medley relay.

Webster City was paced by Justin Callahan, as he was the winner in the 400 hurdles and placed third in the 400.

Next action for St. Edmond will be on May 15 when they compete in a 1A state-qualifier in Armstrong.

Starting at $4.94/week.
