FD’s Rial, Davidson in semis

CORALVILLE — Trace Rial has been in big situations on the mat before, and now, the Fort Dodge sophomore will be attacking the competition head on.

Rial and senior teammate Koy Davidson reached the semifinals of the Dan Gable Donnybrook after opening day competition on Friday.

Rial (4-0), who is ranked seventh at 106 pounds (IAwrestle), and top-ranked (IAwrestle) Davidson (4-0) picked up three wins each to reach Saturday’s semifinals.

Rial earned an 8-4 decision in his opening round match, then picked up a 12-0 major decision over teammate Damien Yeoman in the second round. To reach the semis, Rial picked up a 10-1 major decision over Jack Bell of Lombard, Mortini.

“Trace had a really good day,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “He kept a hard pace against some quality opponents. He made some huge gains and put himself on the map.”

Davidson scored a pin in 1:57, then a 19-3 technical fall over Aidan Ehlinger of Linn-Mar in the quarterfinals.

“Koy was dominant. He went out with the mindset of getting a tech or a fall,” Thompson said. “Koy has always wrestled well at the Donnybrook. Now he’ll have two more tough matches.”

Rial squares off with Kane Robles of Joliet (Ill.) in the semifinals. Davidson will have Landen McDowell of Park Hill South.

Seventh-ranked (IAwrestle) Jesse Egli (175) reached the quarterfinals. Egli tallied a major decision and a fall before losing in the quarterfinals.

“Jesse got caught in the quarterfinals, but he wrestled well,” Thompson said. “He won’t lose to that guy again. He just needs some more mat time.”

Eighth-ranked (IAwrestle) Joe Constable (285) had two victories, winning by pin in his opener and another fall after losing in the second round.

“Joe got a bad seed,” Thompson said. “He was the second-rated kid from Wisconsin.”

Yeoman, a freshman, had a tech fall and a decision before losing to Rial at 106. He bounced back with a 23-11 victory over Joshua Hopkins of Staley.

“Damien looked great,” Thompson said. “I feel if he wasn’t on the same side as Trace, he would have been on the podium (eighth or better).”

Jayce Skow (165) earned two falls for FDSH, winning his opener and knocking off Beau Sonnestahl of Linn-Mar in wrestlebacks.

“Overall, the wins and losses are not an indication of how we competed,” Thompson said. “We wrestled a lot better than we did on Thursday and made some gains. We need to work on our growth mindset and hopefully we continue to grow by February.”

Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m., with the finals to start at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
