Benedict wins W-SR title
WAVERLY — For the second straight tournament Mariaha Benedict met a familiar foe in the finals.
For the second consecutive time, Benedict was crowned the champion.
The fifth-ranked (IAwrestle) Benedict, went a full three periods this time against Waverly-Shell Rock senior Lilly Stough (20-2).
Benedict (22-1) earned a 10-1 major decision to claim her second title over Strough. At the Dan Gable Donnybrook last Saturday, Benedict earned a fall.
Stough is a three-time state qualifier and two-time seventh place finisher.
The Dodger junior, who is now 96-22 in her career, had two falls and an 18-0 technical fall leading up to the championship match.
“It was nice to get to the third period and build the gas tank and get some confidence,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “We got some points and now we can use this as a building block for Council Bluffs and see some different competition.”
Addie Mikesell (235) placed fourth for the Dodgers.
Freshmen Brooklyn Nelson (105) and Makayla Liska (155) were both sixth. Nelson earned a decision in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals. Liska had two first period falls and a second period pin. She picked up a nine second fall on the consolation side.
“This was a really hard week of wrestling for the girls that have done it for the first time,” Koenig said. “They were on five mats and it was a big atmosphere. This has been a tough stretch, but daunting weeks like this helps build a lot of character.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday and Saturday when they head to Council Bluffs for a two-day tournament.
