Mixed bag for Gaels at CYO volleyball
ALGONA — The St. Edmond volleyball team won two matches at the CYO tournament on Saturday inside the Bishop Garrigan gym.
All three of St. Edmond’s losses, meanwhile, came against Top-5 ranked squads from Class 1A, 2A and 3A, and the Gaels went three sets with two of them.
St. Edmond (10-5 overall) topped the Golden Bears 19-21, 21-11, 15-7 and Remsen St. Mary’s, 21-16 and 21-17. The Gaels lost to No. 3 (3A) Sioux City Heelan (21-17, 21-12), No. 3 (1A) Le Mars Gehlen (21-16, 17-21, 6-15) and No. 2 (2A) Carroll Kuemper (21-8, 12-21, 7-15).
“We had a good day overall,” said SEHS head coach Heather Seeden. “We went three sets with both Gehlen and Kuemper, and had a tight first set with Heelan before dropping two.
“We would like to have both that Gehlen second set and Kuemper second set back, but all in all, it was a positive experience to be tested like this.”
St. Edmond worked on its rotation as well, given it was playing five matches in one day.
“For the first time this season, we worked in a couple of subs more in Abby Hess and Sophia Schlienz,” Sweden said. “Both of them showed they were capable of handling that.
“It’s really hard to come off the bench and be expected to perform in a high pressure situation, but both of them did.”
Mariah Myers had a strong day with 45 kills. Ava Underberg added 21 and Lauren Gibb 14.
Sasha Hess tallied 54 digs, while Claire O’Connor dished out 83 assists.
The Gaels served 90 percent overall with 17 aces.
St. Edmond is back in action on Tuesday when they host Webster City (8-6) as part of Homecoming week.
