St. Edmond wins its regular-season finale
Seniors JT Laufersweiler and Hayden Derrig helped lead the St. Edmond baseball team to a victory in their regular season finale at Rogers Park here Wednesday night.
Laufersweiler hit an inside-the-park home run and earned the win on the mound while Derrig had a double and two hits from the leadoff spot as the Gaels scored a come-from-behind 6-5 win over West Bend-Mallard.
Derrig pitched four innings, striking out six with one walk and no hits allowed. He faced 12 batters.
Laufersweiler tossed three innings while driving in two.
“For the second straight game, we hit the ball well,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “But our errors really hurt us. We’ve had games where if we had just two errors, they weren’t really costly ones, but these were.
“With the postseason starting Saturday, we’ve got to play with more of a sense of urgency. I didn’t think we did that (Wednesday night).”
The Gaels (7-13 overall) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to see the Wolverines (6-15) answer back with two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take the lead. That would be short-lived, though, as St. Edmond scored twice in the sixth.
Max Webster was 3-for-3 for the Gaels. Derrig and Laufersweiler each had two hits and scored twice.
Grant Galles drove in a pair and scored a run, Kade Schlegel had a hit and an RBI and Kinnick Henning recorded a hit with a run.
For West Bend-Mallard, Mitch Stevens drove in two runs. Houston Nielsen scored twice, while striking out four over four innings on the mound.
Up next for the Gaels will be Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-20) back here Saturday night in a Class 1A, Substate 3 first round contest beginning at 7 p.m. The Wolverines play North Iowa (2-21) that same night in Algona.
