The fourth-ranked Iowa Central baseball team continues to fire on all cylinders in the early stages of the season.

For the third consecutive doubleheader, the Tritons plated at least 10 runs in both games, finishing off a four-game sweep of Moberly Area here Friday at Rogers Park.

Scores were 11-0 and 14-6.

With the wins, Iowa Central is now 20-0 overall, surpassing the 18-2 mark to start the year by the 2015-16 team for best in school history.

“You set a goal to win every single day, so the fact that we have been able to do that so far is a testament to our guys,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “We have talented players who still understand we have a lot of areas for improvement — especially with the games we have coming up on our schedule.

“We know we are going to be playing a lot better competition moving forward. our league is very good top to bottom and we know if we do things like we have been, we are going to struggle.”

Along with Iowa Central, Southeastern is ranked sixth and Kirkwood checks in at No. 11. Eight of the 12 ICCAC teams currently have a winning record overall and at least 10 wins to their credit.

On Thursday, the Tritons battled through the rain and cold to take a twinbill from Moberly Area, 15-6 and 17-6. Iowa Central combined to hit nine homers in the two games, including five in the nightcap.

Cooper Nicholson and Will Smoot each had a pair with Peter Johnson, Jack Mausser, Harrison Bowman and Josh Hatano also going deep. Nicholson finished with five RBI on the day and Smoot four.

Justin Benjamin earned the win in the opener with six strikeouts in three-plus innings of work, while CJ Byrdak had four strikeouts to score the victory in game two.

The bats remained hot Friday with four more homers leaving the park in the doubleheader. Bowman, Johnson and Mausser all went deep in support of ace Josh Kirchhoff, who struck out six over five-plus on the mound.

Bowman and Mausser each drove in three with Johnson plating a pair.

Jake Busson concluded the series with a homer in the nightcap, driving in four. Bowman had three more RBI with a triple and a double, while Troy Berg had two hits and drove in two.

“We’ve talked about the rankings and projections that are out there,” Stein said. “What I think is a credit to our team is that they understand each time out, they are going to get the best shot of the opposition. They know that the target on their backs is only growing with each win.”

Iowa Central returns to action when they host Lake Region State out of North Dakota for a four-game set beginning Saturday.
