BIG TEN GLORY

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Big Ten Tournament didn’t start the way Drake Ayala wanted it to, but Ayala learned a lot in one weekend.

The three-time Fort Dodge state champion, the No. 2 seed, lost to No. 7 Michael DeAugustino of Michigan, 4-2 in the first round at 125 pounds.

Ayala reeled off four straight victories to finish third for the Hawkeyes. Fellow Dodger graduate Brody Teske placed fifth.

The former Dodger beat No. 8 Brendan McCrone of Ohio State by fall in 1:46. He then topped third-seed Eric Barnett of Wisconsin, 8-1 to move into consolation semifinals against No. 9 Dean Peterson of Rutgers.

Peterson upset top-seed Matt Ramos of Purdue in the quarterfinals.

Against Peterson, Ayala came away with a 4-1 victory, setting up the showdown with Ramos for third place.

Ayala earned the bronze medal with a 4-1 decision.

“Obviously third isn’t what I wanted this weekend,” Ayala said. “But I learned a lot about myself.

“I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Teske (133), a four-time state champion for the Dodgers, made big waves in the opening round of the tournament. Teske, the 14th seed, upset No. 3 Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State 15-13. Teske then continued into the semifinals with an 11-5 win over No. 11 Dustin Norris of Purdue.

Teske lost a 12-6 contest to No. 2 Dylan Shawver of Rutgers, 12-6.

In his first consolation match, Teske lost to No. 4 Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska, 9-6 in SV-1.

Teske bounced back with a 4-1 decision over seventh-seed Braxton Brown of Maryland in the medal match.
