Fort Dodge girls open postseason

Postseason basketball returns to the Dodger gym on Wednesday night, as the Fort Dodge girls host Boone.

Tip in this Class 4A, Region 7 quarterfinal contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last week, the Dodgers (9-11 overall) closed out the regular season with a commanding 54-25 victory at Des Moines East. They won two of three down the stretch, also besting Marshalltown around a loss to sixth-ranked (Class 4A) Mason City.

Sophomore LJ Maehl leads the way for FDSH in scoring and rebounding at 16 and 8.3 per game. Mackenzie McIlrath is second in scoring and has a team-high 54 assists, while Dakota Pommer averages six points and Brooklyn Pommer 6.6 rebounds.

The Toreadors (4-17) are paced by senior Erin Ades, as she is averaging almost 15 points and six rebounds a night. Sydney Adams adds eight points and Macy Chesnut five.

Almost half of Boone’s field goal attempts this year have been 3-pointers, but they are shooting just 20 percent from deep. They have dropped 16 in a row after starting the year 4-1.

Fort Dodge leads the series, 9-1, winning each of the last two meetings. The most recent was a 41-34 victory for the Dodgers in their season opener. Maehl scored 16 in that game with Ades posting 25.

The winner advances to Saturday’s semifinal at Humboldt (17-4). The top-half of the bracket will see LeMars (17-3) face either Sioux Center (14-6) or Spencer (1-20).

Starting at $4.94/week.
