J-Hawks pull away from Dodger girls

URBANDALE — The Fort Dodge girls couldn’t slow down Urbandale on Monday, dropping a 55-40 decision to the J-Hawks.

“We played pretty well,” Dodger head coach Scott Messerly said. “We worked very hard against a well-coached Urbandale team. They were big and physical.

“We played through being down and got to the line when we needed to…we just couldn’t get the stops. But the girls played hard.”

A late 8-0 run in the final minute of the first quarter gave the J-Hawks a nine-point edge they would never surrender. Fort Dodge was still within eight at the halftime break and only trailed by nine with seven minutes to go but Urbandale slowly pulled away.

LJ Maehl had 18 points for FDSH (7-10 overall), with Mackenzie McIlrath adding 12. Brooklyn Pommer pulled down 12 rebounds, with Pommer and McIlrath recording six steals each.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Friday at home against Marshalltown. Varsity tip is set for 6:15 p.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
