Pair of NCC tilts this week for Gael hoop squads

Three games remain for the St. Edmond basketball teams before entering the extended holiday break, including two this week in the North Central Conference.

The Gaels host Webster City on Tuesday before closing out the week at Clear Lake this Friday. Both doubleheaders begin at 6:15 p.m. with the girls contest.

Following a perfect start to the year, the St. Edmond boys (2-2 overall, 1-1 in league) find themselves looking to bounce back after defeats on the road to South Hamilton and Humboldt.

Sophomore Hunter Horn leads the team at 19.5 points per game, shooting 48 percent from the field with 10.5 rebounds. Classmate Jack McElroy is second at 12 points while senior Sam Mericle is averaging 10 for the Gaels so far this year.

The Lynx (0-2, 0-0) have yet to play a conference game, opening with setbacks to Aplington-Parkersburg and South Central Calhoun by a combined nine points. Briar Klaver is averaging 18 points and 5.5 rebounds a night with senior classmate Jace Larson adding 15.5 and 13.5, including seven rebounds on the offensive glass.

The Lions (4-0, 0-0) have won two games by double digits and two more by three points each, including a 55-52 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock recently. Thomas Meyer, a Div. I football recruit, leads the team with 13 points a night on 64 percent shooting.

CJ Tracy and the St. Edmond girls (1-4, 1-1) picked up their first win in two seasons earlier this month with a 50-43 triumph over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows. They have since dropped three straight games.

Josie Harvey, Payton Bradley and Anna Lursen are all averaging around six points a night, with Lursen adding seven rebounds and freshman Chloe Palmer almost five.

Webster City (0-6, 0-2) is looking for its first win of the season and fifth in a row in the series. Olivia Gallentine leads the team with 10 points and five rebounds a night.

Clear Lake (3-2, 2-0) won the NCC title last year and has not lost to the Gaels since 2015. Madi Ott is averaging 13 points per game and Xada Johnson nine with six rebounds.

Starting at $4.94/week.
