FD girls win big again

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls basketball team picked up their second straight win, throttling Des Moines Lincoln 65-25 on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers (3-1 overall) held the Railsplitters (1-3) to single digits in all four quarters, with a press defense giving them fits.

“We pressed them in different ways and we also used a trap defense,” said FDSH head coach Scott Messerly. “They made some bad passes and decisions and that helped us play with no foul trouble.

“We were able to steal the passes instead of the ball.”

Three Dodgers reached double digits, led by senior Mackenzie McIlrath’s career-high 23 points. She hit nine field goals, including four three-pointers.

Sophomore LJ Maehl added 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior Brooklyn Pommer contributed 11 points and five rebounds, while junior Meah McCaleb finished with.

“Mackenzie had a great game,” Messerly said. “She and LJ hit some threes and we were able to turn it up in the second half.

“Meah played well, too. Getting 31 points between our guards is a good stretch for us.”

The Dodgers built a 40-10 halftime lead and stretched it to 52-17 after the third.

“We were down Ashlyn Wills again (injury), but (sophomore) Dakota (Pommer) has been playing like a starter,” Messerly said. “We don’t have a lot of depth, so we our developing our younger kids.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Waterloo East for a 6:15 p.m. varsity tip.
