FD boys show signs of improvement

WATERLOO — The Fort Dodge boys basketball team couldn’t get past Waterloo East here Friday after a strong opening half.

The Dodgers (0-5 overall) trailed by just two at the break, but couldn’t pull through, dropping a 57-48 road decision to the Trojans (3-1).

Fort Dodge built a 13-9 lead after one period, and was up 27-25 at intermission. The Trojans built a big lead with a run that exteded the edge to nearly 20 points, though.

“We’ve been preaching to the guys not to have lulls of energy,” said FDSH assistant coach Charles Clayton. “The effort was there for the most part, but we kind of hit a wall.

“We got into some foul trouble and had an injury, but we were in it the whole first half. We played seven guys and they played 12. They wore us down in the fourth quarter.”

Fort Dodge did climb back to within six points before bowing out.

Junior Cade Westerhoff paced the Dodgers with 19 points. Westerhoff hit six field goals, including one three-pointer.

Junior Carter Woodruff was also in double figures with 11 points.

Da’Jon Sharkey (16 points) and Da’Shaundis Moore (14) paced the Trojans. They had seven and six field goals each, respectively.

Fort Dodge is back in action on Thursday when they host Humboldt at 7:45 p.m.
