Benedict, Pulis win titles for Dodgers
WAVERLY — Mariaha Benedict and Maddie Pulis earned championships at the Go-Hawk Invitational for Fort Dodge here on Tuesday night.
Benedict (135 pounds) and Pulis (170), who are both ranked sixth, pinned their way to gold medals.
“Mariaha and Maddie went out and did what they do best,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “They didn’t keep team scores, but we had 129 points and we were without two of our girls.
“We still haven’t wrestled with our full team yet.”
Gracie Harvey (110 pounds) was third, while Alejandra Manzanilla (105), Macy Brown (130) and Delaney O’Connor (140) all placed fourth.
“Gracie got injured in the semifinals,” Koening said. “She pinned a tough girl that placed sixth at the Donnybrook (Waverly-Shell Rock’s Macy Tiedt). I don’t even know if she realizes that yet.”
Benedict (22-2) had a fall in the first and second periods of her first two matches. She pinned Cedar Falls’ Anna Johnson in 3:09 to claim the title.
Pulis (17-6) had three first-period falls on the day and won the title with a fall in 1:36 over Cedar Falls’ Elizabeth Mills.
Harvey (17-6) had a big victory in the third-place match, pinning Tiedt (2:29).
Harvey prevailed in three matches, while Manzanilla, Brown, O’Connor and Feltz won two each.
The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they compete at Des Moines East in a quadrangular with Ames, East and Waterloo East.
