Tritons make trek to Kansas
DODGE CITY, Kan. — Coming off a tough loss, the ninth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Iowa Central football team hits the road on Saturday for a 564-mile trek to play 14th-rated Dodge City here Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Last week, the Tritons (5-2 overall) fell to No. 7 Butler, 45-10, seeing their three-game win streak come to an end. With three games remaining, including a date next week with second-ranked Iowa Western, ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto knows there is plenty still to be determined.
“We’ve had a good week of practice with great energy from the guys in our camp,” Montalto said. “Honestly, they enjoy being on the road like this. We’ll break the trip up and stop in Manhattan at Kansas State which is a great opportunity for them.
“But this gets them away from the dorms and regular schedule, and gives us a chance to really get them prepared.”
Butler was efficient on offense, recording over 450 yards while going a combined 5-for-8 on third- and fourth-down attempts. Iowa Central, meanwhile, was held to just 31 percent efficiency on third-down and had five turnovers.
Justin Silverstein threw for 193 yards and ran for 64, hitting Mario Sanders for a touchdown. The other points came on a Kongolo Mwenemkamba 21-yard field goal.
Sanders, who continues to receive FBS offers, is second in the country in both receiving yards per game (103.4) and touchdowns (nine). Silverstein has thrown for 1,314 yards and 11 scores, adding 188 and three on the ground.
Jaylon Washington leads the Tritons with 210 yards rushing while Adriel Fussell has a team-high four rushing TDs. Behind Sanders, Michael Bartolotta has 17 receptions for 154 with Harold Trainer IV and Tavis Maloy combining for 21 catches and over 300 yards.
The defense is anchored by Isaiah Bruce, Aaron Warren and Eli West. Bruce has 2.5 sacks with Warren and West each recording 30 tackles.
Dodge City (4-3) has won three of four in the KJCCC, including wins over Coffeyville, Highland and Garden City. They also topped Ellsworth last week and lost in the season opener to Iowa Western, 27-20.
Grant Ciccarone has thrown for almost 1,500 yards with 13 touchdowns, Mark McDonald leads the ground attack with 469 yards and Jalen Rose Hannah has caught 39 passes for 364 and five TDs.
“This is a very explosive team with a lot of home run threats on the offensive side of the ball,” Montalto said. “On defense, they fly around and get after it.”
On defense, the Conquistators are allowing 400 yards and 30.5 points per game with Alexandre Dedieu recording 3.5 sacks and Jonethan Wiltshire 67 tackles.
