Stern competition for Dodger swimmers

AMES — The Fort Dodge girls swim team was in action on Tuesday against two of the top teams in the state.

The Dodgers lost to fourth-ranked West Des Moines Valley (127-59) and No. 6 Ames (144-42).

Head coach Ashley Beaumont’s squad came away with two runner-up showings, a bronze and a pair of fourth-place finishes.

Dodger junior Hailey Vogel was a silver medalist in the 50 freestyle (25.53). Fellow junior Julia Eastman (1:02.61) was second in a tight race with Jaylyn Light of Ames (10:02.42) in the 100 backstroke.

“It was good to see both of those girls compete like that,” said Beaumont. “It was Hailey’s best time of the season. I was hoping with a brand new pool, we would see faster times.

“We had some solid races against two of the top teams in the state. It was great to have as we head into the stretch run of our season.”

The quartet of Eastman, Gracie Harvey, Delaney O’Connor and Vogel were third in the 200 freestyle (148.64).

Vogel was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.00).

The team of Eastman, Raegan Wooldridge, Harvey and Vogel placed fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:58.09).

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Marshalltown in the FDSH pool.

Starting at $4.94/week.
