Gaels open at Garrigan

ALGONA — St. Edmond hopes it has better luck this time around against Bishop Garrigan.

The Gael baseball squad takes on the Golden Bears in a Class 1A district opener here on Saturday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

On Thursday at Rogers Park, Garrigan rolled to a 22-4 win to conclude the regular season with a 22-6 record. Garrett Heying and Drew Lappe drove in four runs each for the Golden Bears. Nathan Merron and Drew Fogarty added three RBI a piece.

Justin Bauer, Keaton Helleseth and Merron all had three hits. Merron scored four times.

Helleseth doubled and tripled.

Drew Lappe was the winning pitcher.

Freshman Grant Galles continued his recent surge at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBI for St. Edmond. John Nemmers, Hayden Derrig and Ethan Swisher added two hits each as well. Swisher scored twice.

Derrig is batting .475 as a junior for the Gaels. Galles (.413), JT Laufersweiler (.345) and Nemmers (.321) are next in line.

Garrigan, who is 21-4 since May 22, is paced offensively by Heying (6 home runs, 41 RBI, .548 average), Helleseth (.452, 31 RBI) and Lappe (.375, 27 RBI). Cal Birkey is hitting .368 with 4 homers and 24 driven in.

Fogarty (7-1, 1.37 ERA) and Merron (7-1, 1.52) have been the Golden Bears’ pitching aces.
