Gibb finishes up at Principal Classic

WEST DES MOINES – Judd Gibb finished off his third consecutive round of even-par or better here Sunday at the PGA Champions Principal Charity Classic.

Gibb, a Fort Dodge resident, finished tied for 52nd overall at 3-under for the tournament, which was held at Wakonda Club. Stephen Ames won the event at 17-under followed by Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker.

For the former Iowa State University letterwinner, though, it was tough to think about the positives from the event as opposed to the missed opportunities.

“As a competitor, I’m already thinking about the holes I gave strokes away on,” Gibb said. “I’m sure in a week or two, I’ll be able to sit down and think about what I did and how I played, but right now, I’d love to have some of those holes and chances back.”

Gibb started on No. 10 and reeled off three consecutive pars before back-to-back birdies on the par-5 13th and par-3 14th. He followed that up with two straight bogeys, though, before rebounding with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.

“I was really feeling it there,” he said. “I had it going and just had a couple bad holes. I was feeling pretty good, though, it was just mental mistakes that kept me from finishing the way I wanted to finish and possibly placing a little higher.”

On the front-nine, Gibb racked up five more pars to remain at 2-under for the day before bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 dropped him back to even-par. He closed with pars on the final two holes.

“I didn’t drive the ball particularly well, but I had some great up-and-downs and I putted well,” Gibb said. “I can hang my hat on that a little bit before I get back out there and try to drive it better next time.”

He finished with 10 birdies over the three rounds of play with his son, Andrew, serving as his caddy. Lauren Gibb, his daughter, was able to watch from the gallery on Sunday.

“It was great to be with Andrew all week,” Gibb said. “And after having softball games the other two days, Lauren was able to come and that was awesome. It was fun showing them that dad can still compete a little.”

Gibb, a member of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, finished tied with Tom Lehman and ahead of notables Scott McCarron, Chris DiMarco and Scott Verplank.

While most of the Champions Tour heads to Madison, Wis. next weekend, Gibb will take part in a pro-am in Albia.
