Council moves to address FD traffic light woes
Five intersections to get new signal systems
Relief is on the way for drivers who feel they get stopped at traffic lights on First Avenue South for what seems like an endless amount of time.
The City Council on Monday bought a new traffic signal control system for five intersections. Those intersections are:
• First Avenue South and Seventh Street.
• First Avenue South and Eighth Street.
• First Avenue South and Ninth Street.
• Kenyon Road and Avenue E.
• 20th Avenue North and 15th Street.
“These five intersections are experiencing traffic signal issues leading to undue delay for the motoring public,” Public Works Direct Brett Daniel wrote in a report to the council.
He wrote that the control system at Kenyon Road and Avenue E was installed in 2005. The one at 20th Avenue North and 15th Street was installed in 2007. He wrote that the controls at the three First Avenue South intersections were installed in 2014, but have proven to be unreliable.
To solve the problems, the council purchased new systems from General Traffic Controls, of Spencer, for $134,000.
Money from the Road Use Tax and the local option sales tax will be used to pay for the purchase.
When the systems are received, they will be installed by the city electrician.
