The St. Edmond baseball team found an emphatic way to end their losing streak here Wednesday night.

Behind a 12-run first inning, the Gaels erased a 1-0 deficit and snapped a 10-game skid with a commanding 17-2 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden in four innings at Rogers Park.

John Nemmers had an inside-the-park home run and scored three times, while Hayden Derrig and JT Laufersweiler combined for seven hits, six runs, three RBI and four stolen bases.

That was all the run support Tyler McDowell would need, as the senior struck out three over four innings of work.

“We hit the ball, threw strikes and didn’t commit an error,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “It sounds simple, but when you do those things, you win games.

“What I’ve been most proud of, though, is the number of kids we’ve had coming in for extra practice time. I really think that has been paying off for us.”

Joe Touney, Grant Galles and McDowell all drove in a run, with Kinnick Henning and Galles swiping two bases. As a team, St. Edmond (3-13 overall, 3-8 in North Central Conference) stole 10 bases and had nine players score runs.

“Joe is a kid who has been coming in for those extra practices,” Szalat said. “He made a heck of a play out there at second and came through with a big hit. You can just tell that they are really enjoying the work they are putting in.

“We’ve had games like this during the year so it was really a lot of fun to see them have this kind of success on our end.”

The 17 runs were the most for the Gaels since a 16-9 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden last year. The last time they posted over 17 runs was in 2018 during an 18-4 win vs. North Union.

Up next for St. Edmond will be at Algona on Friday night.
