1990s: all Dodgers all the time in the winner’s circle
The 1990s saw the Fort Dodge Senior High golf program emerge as a dominant force on the local scene.
Beginning with Monte Huss’s title in 1992, Dodger players were in the hunt on an annual basis on both the men’s and women’s side of the Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota Webster County tournament.
Huss won after graduating from FDSH a little over a month before the ’92 event. In 1995, freshman-to-be Matt McIntyre emerged as the men’s open division champion at just 14 years old.
FDSH alum Jeff Peterson, who graduated in 1994, then took first place in 1996. That was followed by a three-year run at the top by 1995 grad and Dodger all-stater Cory Braunschweig.
The women’s open division was more of the same. Stacey Bergman reigned during her entire time as a Dodger, capturing her first crown as a freshman in the summer of 1993. She reeled off four more victories in a row before moving on from the competition in 1998.
This year’s two-day event will be Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9. All citizens who either live or work in Webster County are invited to participate.
Tee times are being accepted now. The men’s open, senior (50 and older) and super senior (65 and older) divisions are asked to sign up by July 5 at Lakeside Golf Course, where the first round will take place. The women’s open, senior and super senior competitors will register at the Fort Dodge Country Club.
Tee times will be set in nine-minute increments on the men’s side, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at Lakeside. Women’s tee times start at 8 a.m.
Groups are asked to sign up either by phone or in person at their respective designated courses as soon as possible.
For more information or to sign up, please call the FDCC (955-8551) or Lakeside (576-6741).
