IOWA CITY — Jalen Adams hasn’t been on the University of Iowa campus very long, but the former Fort Dodge Senior High all-stater is already making noise in the Big Ten.
The Dodger softball program’s career wins leader in the circle was named to the Big Ten all-freshman squad this week.
“Being on the Big Ten freshman team is just another step towards my goals here at Iowa,” Adams said. “Just being able to show my parents and other people who have helped me become the player I am today how much their belief in me mattered is really cool.
“There are so many people who make me the player I am, and to be able to receive awards like this is an experience I’m just so incredibly grateful for.”
Adams leads the Hawkeyes with a 2.04 ERA, which is seventh best in the league. She has appeared in 32 games with 27 starts.
During the regular season, Adams threw eight complete games, including a shutout against Syracuse early in the year.
Adams had a career high nine innings pitched in an extra-inning win over Central Arkansas. That same weekend, she had a career-high seven strikeouts versus Omaha.
Adams pitched the Hawkeyes to win in the opening round Big Ten Tournament game against Maryland The Hawkeyes (31-26 overall) beat the Terrapins, 7-1, before bowing out on Thursday against top-seeded Northwestern.
Adams struck out two with three hits allowed and two walks in her complete-game effort versus Maryland.
“Finally getting a taste of some postseason wins is really motivating, and seeing how happy my teammates were for me was really cool,” Adams said. “We all support each other so well; it just shows how talent isn’t always the determining factor in these bigger games as we play, it’s the chemistry of the team that really makes a difference.”
Fellow ex-Dodgers Tory Bennett and Tristin Doster combined to drive in three runs, as Bennett was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Doster pinch-hit, driving in a run and working a walk.
The Hawkeyes bowed out against Northwestern, 3-1. Both teams had five hits.
