Ex-Dodgers power Hawkeyes
TAMPA, Fla. — Tristin Doster’s grand slam highlighted a huge late surge to help the Iowa softball squad distance itself from host South Florida on Saturday at the USF Tournament, 12-4.
The former Fort Dodge all-stater’s home run highlighted a rally as the Hawkeyes (18-11 overall) plated four runs in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth to erase a 4-2 deficit.
Fellow ex-Dodger standout Tory Bennett had three hits and scored twice for Iowa in the win. Doster and Bennett both doubled.
In an 8-7 victory over Marist, Bennett and Doster recorded two hits a piece and drove in a run.
Ninth-ranked Texas plated two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to finally shake the Hawks in the finale, 5-1. Doster drove in the lone Iowa run, and both Doster and Bennett tallied hits.
True freshman Jalen Adams tossed a complete game, striking out two against the Longhorns (24-5).
Bennett, also a true freshman at shortstop, is now batting .356 with 19 runs and 12 RBI. She has doubled five times. Doster, a sophomore catcher, is hitting .400 with 11 driven in.
Adams, the ex-Dodger hurler, is 4-5 with a 1.49 earned run average in 56.1 innings pitched.
