Jondle earns first team All-State honors

Area players honored for football efforts

The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association and Iowa Football Coaches Association honored 21 Messenger-area players as all-state for their efforts on the football field this past fall.

Among those named were Fort Dodge’s Javion Jondle, Humboldt’s Will Orness and Tayeton Lohaus, Southeast Valley’s Justin Loseke, Webster City’s Jaxon Cherry, Algona’s Alex Manske, Newell-Fonda’s Mason Dicks, Greene County’s Richard Daugherty and North Union’s Bryer Prochniak, who were all repeat selections.

Rounding out the honor teams from the area were Humboldt’s Lance Coon, Kaleb McCullough and Trever Beach; Algona’s Lamorn Ulfers; Greene County’s Noah Cornell and Nathan Behne; Nevan Foss from Clarion-Goldfield/Dows; West Bend-Mallard’s Lucas Fehr, Ethan Zaugg and Ben Massner; and Newell-Fonda’s Ryan Greenfield and Pedro Teixeira-Patricio.

Jondle, a second team selection last year for the Dodgers, caught 66 passes for 811 yards and 11 touchdowns in earning Class 4A first team honors as a returner. The Iowa Central commit returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, averaging 56 yards per return.

During his FDSH career, Jondle recorded 151 receptions for 2,098 yards with 24 touchdowns. He finished ranked first in catches, tied for second in TDs and second in yards.

“To be named first team all-state is a big honor,” Jondle said. “I worked hard in the offseason and all year and did this for my son.

“This is just another accomplishment to check off my list and another step in the right direction. To be a part of all of our program’s greats means a lot. I’ve looked up to so many of them since I was a kid. If it wasn’t for my coaches and teammates, though, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. I’m very grateful for everyone who’s helped along the way. It truly means a lot to know I’ll leave as a better person because of who I was surrounded by.”

Orness led Humboldt to back-to-back 3A district titles and appearances in the state semifinals. He transitioned from wide receiver where he earned all-state honors last year to quarterback, racking up over 1,400 total yards and 13 TDs while making 31.5 tackles and picking off two passes on defense.

“I am proud of all of our kids,” Humboldt head coach Derrick Elman said. “We’ve had an outstanding year and it’s because of all of them. Will has been instrumental to our success over the past two years. His play this year on defense was awesome and he was rarely thrown at. I’m very happy that he was rewarded with first team all-state again this year.”

Lohaus, a senior who has committed to South Dakota, recorded 35.5 tackles with 6.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss as part of a Wildcat defense that pitched five shutouts.

“The defensive line in 3A is stacked this year and I’m so happy (Lohaus) to see in this group,” Elman said. “Overall, we had an awesome year and it’s great to see these kids get recognized.”

Coon ran for 1,566 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior, adding six receptions for 56 yards. McCullough, a member of the offensive line, also had 31.5 tackles with 4.5 sacks and six tackles for loss. Beach was 9-for-9 on field goals, 31-for-35 on extra-point attempts and caught 21 passes for 360 yards with four TDs.

“Lance did a great job of reading blocks and getting to the second level,” Elman said. “Kaleb has been one of the hardest workers I’ve had the pleasure of coaching here at Humboldt. He is a teammate that is looked up to and emulated by those around him. He left a lasting impression on his teammates for sure.

“Trever has been a weapon on special teams. He has the ability to place the ball when kicking off and going 9-for-9 on field goals doesn’t happen very often. It’s great to see his hard work pay off.”

Loseke, named to the 1A team a year after helping Southeast Valley capture the first state title in school history, had 80.5 tackles with 63 solo stops, two sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. He also caught 21 passes for 290 yards and two TDs.

Cherry, a junior, ran for 1,804 yards and 31 touchdowns to anchor one of the top rushing units in the state. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry, caught three passes for 108 yards with a score and had 61 tackles with 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.

Manske, who made the all-state team as a freshman last year, threw for 1,688 yards with 14 TDs, ran for 407 with six scores and had 58.5 tackles on defense with two interceptions. He has already made a recruiting visit to Tennessee is headed to Wisconsin this week.

Dicks led Newell-Fonda to the state semifinals, throwing for over 1,700 yards and 23 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He also ran for 890 yards, scored 14 times and had 34 tackles on defense.

Daugherty, a senior, caught 16 passes for 342 yards with three TDs and made 43 tackles with four interceptions and a fumble recovery for a score. Prochniak ran for 1,208 yards, caught 16 passes for 315 and had 19 touchdowns.

Captains of their respective classes were Cael Ortmann of Remsen St. Mary’s (eight-player), Patrick Brown III from Grundy Center (A), Nolan Delong of Durant (1A), Zach Lutmer from Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (2A), Harlan’s Aidan Hall (3A), Braylon Kammrad of Lewis Central (4A) and Southeast Polk’s Abu Sama (5A).
