Dodgers eclipse 30-win mark
WATERLOO — The Fort Dodge baseball team surpassed the 30-win mark for the first time in 14 seasons with a sweep of Waterloo East here on Wednesday.
Scores were 11-0 in six innings and 14-1 in five.
The Dodgers (31-8 overall, 13-3 in the Iowa Alliance North) scored 10 runs in the sixth to break the opener wide open and end it early in the process. Tru McBride, Bo Marsh and Will McElroy were a combined 7-for-10 at the plate with seven RBI and three runs scored, as Davis Underberg and Tanner Peterson each had two hits and drove in a pair.
On the mound, Cael Adams allowed just three hits, striking out seven with only one walk.
“Twenty-four hours ago we faced a guy throwing 85-plus (miles per hour). On (Wednesday), we stepped in against someone throwing 67 to 70,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “It took us time to adjust, but once we did, we took off. With the way Cael was pitching, I was never worried.
“I feel like 1-through-9, we have guys that can compete and produce. That’s why we have won this many games. Tru, Bo and Will are really locked in recently. They’re hitting the ball with a ton of confidence.”
Underberg had a triple, with McElroy, Peterson and Marsh each recording a double. Cal Pederson scored twice.
Fort Dodge has reached 30 wins in a season for the first time since the 2012 state runner-up squad. Those Dodgers went a program-best 37-7 and reached the Class 4A championship game.
The nightcap saw more of the same, with a nine-run third being surrounded by runs in each of the other four innings. Underberg had another triple and plated three runs.
Hayden Porter, McBride and Peterson each drove in two, and Mason Frevert scored three times. Underberg pitched the first three innings as well, allowing just two hits to secure the win.
“We got some real nice pitching efforts and our defense was solid behind them,” Utley said. “We got good at-bats throughout, our small-game did well with a couple bunt singles, and we were able to put constant pressure on them.”
Porter stole two bases and had a double. Frevert also had a double.
Peterson, McElroy, Kolton Schiltz and Jaxson Dencklau each scored twice.
The Dodgers are still in a virtual tie with Mason City (27-8, 12-2) in the conference standings. The Riverhawks, who swept Marshalltown on Wednesday, now have a doubleheader with Ames scheduled for Thursday.
A split means Fort Dodge and Mason City share the IAC North crown. If the Riverhawks sweep, they are league champs.
This marks the sixth time in school history the Dodgers have won at least 30 games. The other squads to reach the mark were in 1989, 1990, 2010, 2011 and the ’12 ballclub.
Fort Dodge closes out the regular season on Tuesday at home vs. Webster City, beginning at 7 p.m.
