No. 8 Iowa Central returns home
After spending the past two weeks on the road in Kansas, the Iowa Central football team welcomes the opportunity to play inside Dodger Stadium this Saturday.
The eighth-ranked Tritons will host ICCAC rival Ellsworth at noon.
Following wins over Independence and Garden City, Iowa Central (2-1 overall, 0-0 in league) came up just short at No. 2 Hutchinson, falling 31-28 in overtime.
“No doubt, our kids are excited to be at home and playing in front of a home crowd,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “Right now, our gets play hard. We get to Saturday and they play really hard and compete. They don’t give up and have handled adversity in-game pretty well.
“We’ve been up, been down, battled back and had just about everything happen, but it has been a lot of fun to watch them compete for 60 minutes.”
The Tritons rotated through four players at quarterback, as Justin Silverstein threw two touchdown passes and Omarion Bartlett had another. Jadon Washington ran for 88 yards and a score.
Iowa Central did not have a turnover vs. Hutchinson and forced four, but were also flagged 12 times for 116 yards.
Silverstein has thrown for 323 yards and five touchdowns, while Washington has 161 yards rushing. Izaiah Haslett leads the team with 10 receptions for 137 yards, with Desna Washington catching nine passes for 98 and three scores.
On defense, Jacob Camacho and Rex Van Whye each have 27 tackles, Deonte Bryant has two sacks and the team has forced seven turnovers.
Ellsworth (0-2, 0-0) is coming off a bye following losses to No. 1 (Div. III) College of DuPage (48-25) and Hutchinson (70-7). The Panthers have a team total of negative-17 yards rushing, while Joshua Bauer has thrown for 196 yards and a TD.
“We’ve got to be ready to go vs. Ellsworth,” Montalto said. “They are going to try and come in here and knock us off and we can’t let that happen, we can’t give them any small opening for it to happen.
“We have to take care of business.”
Iowa Central will play two straight at home, hosting DuPage next weekend, before returning to Kansas for back-to-back weeks with games at Coffeyville and 10th-ranked Butler. The Tritons have two more at home after that against Dodge City and No. 3 Iowa Western, before closing the regular season out at Highland.
