Fort Dodge's Adams reaches rare 100-win plateau as mastery of Centennial continues

ANKENY — Senior Jalen Adams continues to add milestones to her record-breaking career at Fort Dodge Senior High.
Adams, a University of Iowa recruit, became only the second pitcher in Dodger history to reach 100 career victories here on Monday as Fort Dodge again swept rival Ankeny Centennial in a Top-10 CIML Iowa Conference matchup.
“It’s a very big honor and definitely fuels my team and I to keep pushing ourselves to new limits,” Adams said. “Stats and numbers are the proof that we are the team to beat this year, but that’s all they are: numbers on paper.
“Numbers can not match the friendships and sisterhood this team has…so yes, it’s a cool milestone to reach as a pitcher, but I couldn’t have done any of it without my girls behind me.”
The senior twirled a two-hitter in No. 4 Fort Dodge’s opening 5-1 victory against the sixth-rated Jaguars (14-9 overall). Freshman Lucy Porter (9-2) picked up the victory as Fort Dodge’s bats stayed hot in a 10-1 nightcap rout.
Fort Dodge (21-5) is now 14-2 all-time against Ankeny Centennial, dating back to 2014. The Dodgers have taken seven straight in the series, as Adams improved her personal ledger to 7-0.
Adams and FDSH beat the Jaguars in the 2020 state semifinals and for the 2021 Class 5A crown.
With her 100th career victory, Adams — now 100-12 overall — moved into second place on FDSH’s all-time win list. She is three behind Suzanne Stripling (103), who pitched for the Dodgers from 1996 to 2000.
“The best thing was that Jalen really had no clue,” said Dodger head coach Andi Adams, her mother. “I’m obviously proud and very excited, because it’s fun and pretty rare these days. But she will only give her team credit, because it’s an individual statistic in a team sport. There’s a false sense of how much one player can do. This is a credit to the entire program.”
Adams (12-3), who is also Fort Dodge’s career strikeout leader at 786 and counting, fanned seven Jaguar batters and didn’t walk anyone. The only Jaguar run was unearned.
In the first contest, Adams did it at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Porter also had two hits and drove in two runs.
Senior Haley Wills had two RBI, and classmate Tory Bennett also drove in a run.
Adams started both the game and the fifth inning with doubles. The Dodgers plated three runs in the fifth. Bennett had a sac bunt to bring Adams home, and Bennett scored on a Wills sac bunt.
Porter then delivered an RBI-groundout to plate freshman classmate Mariah Myers.
“People are doing their job and doing things the right way,” Andi Adams said. “As a mom of these girls, it’s great to see their mentality and enjoyment continue to grow. They’re becoming their own team with a new identity.”
The Dodgers broke out the big bats in the second game, recording 12 hits — including six for extra bases. Myers had a huge night, going 3-for-4 with her fourth and fifth home runs of the season and adding a double as well. She drove in five.
“Hitting like we did in the second game is scary,” Adams said. “The girls are hitting for power, and you don’t really know where it’s going to come from. It’s to the point where you’re expecting it to be hit hard.
“It’s fun to watch.”
Fort Dodge got a scare in the second game, when Bennett got wrapped up with a runner at second base and had to leave the game. Bennett would later return, but in her absence, the Dodgers went into another gear.
“When Tory got hurt, the girls were angry,” Andi said. “She was down and hates to leave, so they were hurting for her and went to bat for her. It was the coolest thing.
“The energy picked up, and we weren’t going to let them beat us.”
Adams was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the nightcap. She was 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with two RBI.
Freshman Meah McCaleb and sophomore Kenzie McIlrath each had doubles and RBIs.
Porter (9-2) allowedjust six hits and one earned run. She had two strikeouts and one walk.
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they play at the Linn-Mar Tournament. They will face Waverly-Shell Rock at Alburnett.
