Milestone win for Humboldt’s Van Pelt

AMES — Third-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt blanked Ames on Thursday, 7-0, as Wildcat head coach Doug Van Pelt picked up the 600th victory of his coaching career.

Senior Ellie Jacobson fired a four-hit shutout for the five-time defending North Central Conference champion Wildcats (16-1 overall), striking out 11. Kendal Clark and Jori Hajek both hit home runs for Humboldt, which plated three runs in the second and two more in the fifth to pull away.

Carlie Thompson contributed two hits in the win. The Wildcats have now reeled off nine consecutive victories since their lone loss to Ogden, when Jacobson didn’t pitch.

Van Pelt’s teams haven’t lost more than seven games in a single season since 2015. Humboldt is 136-19 overall during that stretch.

Ames is now 9-10.
