Gaels can’t stop IKM

Not much went right for the St. Edmond football team here Friday night on Homecoming inside Dodger Stadium.

IKM-Manning recovered a fumble on the second play from scrimmage and proceeded to score on its first four drives of the game in securing a 41-8 victory in the Class A, District 2 opener for both teams.

Stephen Grimm ran for 82 yards and a touchdown, Amos Rasmussen added 72 yards and two scores, and Kyler Rasmussen found the end zone twice for the Wolves (3-2 overall, 1-0 in district).

“It started poorly and went down hill from there,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “We didn’t come out and compete and that was the most disappointing thing.

“I’ve been through 37 Homecomings and I’m not going to blame it on that. We didn’t come here as focused as we needed to be and IKM did.”

After opening the year with wins over ACGC and Underwood, the Wolves entered Friday night off losses to No. 4 (1A) South Central Calhoun and East Sac County. They ran for 254 yards and led 35-0 by halftime vs. the Gaels (2-3, 0-1).

Sean Flattery finally ended the scoring drought for St. Edmond, hitting paydirt from 30 yards out with just over a minute to go in the game. The Gaels were shut out at third-ranked Bishop Garrigan last week.

“IKM had a nice plan and they executed,” Dillon said. “We didn’t. The bottom line is they took it to us. We didn’t answer the bell and the next thing you know, it is 35-0.

“The second half was all window dressing. I was proud of the fact that we competed, I’m just so disappointed in our slow starts, which have been a habit for us.”

The Wolves put together drives of six, 13, five and three plays that all resulted in touchdowns in the opening 20 minutes. The IKM defense was also in a zone, allowing just one first down, which came on the final play from scrimmage when Elijah Litwiller hit Drew Schaeffer for a 32-yard completion.

Litwiller, who was honored at halftime with Jillian Cosgrove as king and queen, connected with Schaeffer three times for 66 yards. The senior also had an interception on defense, with Peyton Spangler recovering a fumble.

St. Edmond is on the road for the next two games, heading to Sioux Central and Ridge View. IKM-Manning welcomes Manson Northwest Webster for its first home game since Sept. 7.
