Williamsburg too much for Albia

A small mistake early did not keep Williamsburg from powering its way into the Class 3A semifinals here Monday night, as the Raiders rolled past Albia at Rogers Park, 11-1 in six innings.

Up next for Williamsburg (34-9 overall) will be a date with Estherville-LC (32-3) in the semifinals on Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Kruger Seeds Field.

After Albia (21-9) took a surprising 1-0 lead in the first, the Raiders answered right back, plating four in the home half before taking command with five in the fourth. Two more runs in the sixth ended the contest early.

Led by head coach Adam C. Berte and senior Peyton Driscoll, Williamsburg has qualified for the elite eight four consecutive years, placing second once and third each of the past two seasons.

Driscoll was as sharp as ever after the mistake in the first, striking out nine with just four hits allowed and one walk. She also helped her own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Carly Rich was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Alley Gorsh had two hits, drove in two and scored. Both are just sophomores for the Raiders, who also have four seniors headed to play college softball.

For Albia, Ashley Beary had a solo home run to begin the game. The Lady Dees last played at state in 2020 when they topped Williamsburg in the finals.

Albia will face Davis County (24-5) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Dodger Field in a consolation contest.
