North Scott stuns No. 1 seed, 7-4

The turnover in the Class 4A bracket continued Monday night, as top-seed and No. 1 North Polk was eliminated by North Scott, 7-4 at Rogers Park.

The Lancers (27-11 overall) advance to face Norwalk (32-9) on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals on Iowa Central Field.

A quick start helped North Scott, who have become very familiar with reaching the final four. The Lancers have now made it to the semis each of the last four times they have qualified.

“We know we have seven innings to get the job done each time,” North Scott head coach Holly Hoelting said. “But I definitely love being the away team and getting the chance to bat and score first.”

That is exactly what her team did, plating three runs off Ava Husak in the opening frame. Carley Bredar finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Teagan Kelley drove in three.

Maddy McDermott, who has signed with the University of Northern Iowa, allowed just nine hits with three earned runs and four strikeouts to pick up the win.

“I just kept my composure and trusted that the defense behind me would get the job done,” McDermott said. “As a team, we just wanted to keep attacking and my teammates kept telling me how confident they were in me.”

After the Comets (30-5) answered back with four unanswered runs between the first and third innings, North Scott plated two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Shelby Spears finished with three hits and Sydney Skarich, the daughter of former St. Edmond track coach Paula Skarich, had a hit and stole a base.

For North Polk, Katelyn Kiever had a two-run homer and both Ella Husak and Ava Husak each had two hits. The Comets will now face Western Dubuque (29-10) in a consolation contest on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. on Veterans’ Field.
